Abstract

At the Institute for Art Education at Justus Liebig University, studies on children's visual behaviour on the computer have been conducted since 1996 under the direction of Prof. Dr. A. von Criegern. In the meantime, initial explorative studies have developed into a research project that investigates the pictorial behaviour of pre-school and early primary school children on the computer on a broader theoretical and empirical basis. Contrary to the results-oriented, rather quantitative research on children's drawing that had been conducted so far, the Giessen team very quickly realised that the entire drawing process and even more so the entire aesthetic behaviour on the computer must be researched using qualitative methods. In order to meet this demand, the observation, recording and analysis procedures were optimised and adapted step by step. The paper presents the significance of the form of video documentation used in the project for the research of children's digital drawing.
