Abstract

The term "video game essay" refers to a form of cinematic examination of computer games in which the game's on-screen action forms the starting point for a visually oriented form of presentation and thematic treatment. Similar to "classic" film work, this aims to promote media competence and self-competence. The modified production process is comparable to that of machinima films. As examples of possible areas of application for this special form of engagement with digital games, this article takes a closer look at extracurricular media work, school and university education.
