Abstract
On the basis of results from our own and other empirical studies on the internet use of young people, the significance of Bourdieu's habitus theory for the explanation of media use and modes of appropriation in media socialisation is explicated. Against this backdrop, the concept of "media competence" is discussed under aspects of milieu-specific media appropriation and, connected to this, certain (media) pedagogical thought patterns and forms of action as a factor of social disadvantage.
