Abstract
In social and educational research, the group discussion method has recently become increasingly important. It is a valid instrument for the reconstruction of collective patterns of orientation, especially for questions of media education and media theory. The article first offers a brief historical-systematic overview of some important lines of development of the method. Subsequently, its fruitfulness for questions in the context of educational media research is elaborated using the example of a concrete research project on generation-specific media use and appropriation cultures.
