Abstract

This paper investigates interaction processes between images and the resulting modification of the perceived sense of the image. The structure of the paper traces the working process. At the beginning of the work, the question of different image connection mechanisms opens up a broad and systematic investigation with and through the medium of the image. Different types of chromatic photographs were cut to the same square size, seamlessly lined up to form pairs and grouped together according to the type of connection. In order to objectify this practical investigation, a qualitative empirical study was designed and conducted in a second part of the work. The aim of this was to determine whether comparable image connection mechanisms can be observed in different people and in what way the paired presentation of an image affects the perceived sense of the image. The results of the study show that distinct types of connection can be distinguished between the image pairs and clearly demonstrate an influence and change in the sense of the image in the paired presentation compared to the single view. In the third part, the findings from the practical image investigations and the empirical study are contrasted with various positions in the humanities and social sciences in order to situate the results in a theoretical framework and a research context.
