Abstract

If one looks at relevant studies on media use behaviour, it becomes apparent that as a rule one speaks of male and female media use practices and thus implicitly assumes that men and women, boys and girls are monolithic blocs that largely homogeneously use or do not use certain media within themselves. The comparison of the two genus groups is often associated with stereotypical dichotomisations, which are reflected, for example, in conclusions that girls in particular tend towards communicative activities such as chatting and e-mailing, while boys show more interest in games, programming and downloading files. Empirical analyses will be used to illustrate that within the group of male youths who are active in youth cultural scenes, differentiations can be found that are not taken into account in common studies. The article concentrates on those text passages within the group discussions in which the topic of computer-mediated communication is dealt with by the young people (mostly in an everyday way).
