Abstract
This paper focuses on the question of how the potential of e-learning can support self-directed learning at vocational schools (Berufsschulen) and how these new learning opportunities can be used effectively in the classroom. Then, existing empirical evidence on self-directed learning is reviewed and different possibilities for promoting self-directed learning are considered or which learning environments are necessary to enable self-directed learning. The special features of e-learning are dealt with and a media-didactic concept is realised. Within the framework of the empirical study, it is examined whether self-directed learning can be supported by e-learning. The study concludes with an assessment of the media-didactic potential of learning environments that support self-directed learning with regard to teaching in vocational schools.
