Abstract
The topic of "IT security" is used to discuss the relationship between media education and information technology education: IT security is a prerequisite for the right to informational self-determination. The structure of the internet makes it necessary to rely on the self-protection of users. The ability to protect oneself must be complemented by security awareness. An adequate model of computers and computer networks is needed to grasp the openness of this new "communication and social space". Teaching security awareness and security competence in dealing with information and communication technologies thus becomes an important component of media competence. In addition, the right to informational self-determination and the acquisition of communicative competences for the Internet must be addressed.
