Abstract
The focus of this paper is to discuss procedures for sequencing photographs, i.e. for making their aspects accessible one after the other in chronological order. It is assumed that a sequencing of photographs is indispensable if an interpretation by means of verbal language is to stand at the end of the examination of photographic material. The answer to this question of how the simultaneity of a photograph and the sequentiality of a linguistic text can be related to each other is pursued by researching empirical survey methods in various fields of science, such as neuropsychology, media effects research, market research, social science or the study of human behaviour in road traffic. In all the methods presented, the aim is to record scanning movements of the eyes or visual perception processes when looking at photographs. Based on such sequencing methods, an image interpretation can be carried out in a methodically regulated step-by-step manner.
