Abstract

The starting point for the "Fundamentals of Media Education" was to explore the current state of media research and, on the basis of such results - which are admittedly not yet comprehensive - to identify determinants for the gradual completion of media education teaching units. This interconnection of science with questions relevant to teaching is undoubtedly a demanding start: but it should be indispensable if one wants to have a reasonably secure starting point for media education. A first difficulty is the state of media research itself. This is not a specific discipline in which, for example, research methods are consistent. Rather, quite different research directions are suppliers, so there are also very different questions and research approaches. If it is not easy to achieve a certain degree of agreement between the different disciplines, even in approximations, it also remains the task of determining which of the results achieved by the different research directions could be relevant for media education.
