Abstract

If one is interested in processing and analysing audiovisual information under formal and content-related aspects, it is not only contemporary, but above all functional, to resort to technical support in the form of computer software. Especially when the uncovering of inner and argumentative structures of phenomena is the focus of interest, working with ATLAS.ti is recommended. In contrast to other analytical tools, the focus here is not on counting and calculating frequencies of occurrence of individual phenomena, but on the interpretative development of statements and connections oriented towards the object of research. The article will first discuss the possibilities of film analysis through the interpretation of the aesthetic dimensions of a non-fictional film and the basic understanding of film analysis, followed by methodological aspects of qualitative analyses when working with ATLAS.ti. The analysis of audiovisual information is presented using a case study from the ARD news programme "Wochenspiegel" as an example. The individual steps of the coding process and the development of networks are examined as examples. Finally, advantages and disadvantages are discussed and an outlook on possible fields of application of film analysis with ATLAS.ti is given.
