Abstract
Within the framework of the project Public Broadcasting and Education. Offer, Use and Function of Children's Programmes, the development of children's television as well as children's radio in Switzerland was comprehensively traced for the first time and placed in relation to the educational mandate formulated in the Swiss Federal Constitution. The study focuses on the following questions: How has the educational offering of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation SRG in German-speaking Switzerland developed for the children's segment? How are the SRG's services for the area of "educational children's offerings" implemented and assessed? In order to answer the questions, the television and radio offerings for children in the period 1980-2006 as well as the corresponding homepages (as of 2005/06) were examined by content analysis. In addition, a document analysis and an expert interview were conducted with a total of 22 current and former producers as well as external observers. The study was completed at the end of February 2007. This article concentrates exclusively on children's television.
