It is already difficult to narrow down the subject matter for which this article aims to define the current situation: Is "empirical research on new media in schools and teacher education" primarily empirical research, primarily media research, or primarily school and teacher education research? Is it primarily interdisciplinary or primarily subject-related? Depending on the emphasis, not only does the exact research question shift, but the researchers' self-image also differs.
